Trump’s relationship has been complex with the court’s conservative majority – despite his instrumental role in establishing it. Roberts Jr. delivered a fond tribute to former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on Thursday, celebrating her legacy as the first woman on the Supreme Court and her commitment to advancing civics and civility after her retirement. During an award ceremony at Duke University to recognize her contribution to civics education, Chief Justice Roberts reiterated his admiration of his former colleague, a crucial swing justice who was often referred to as the most powerful woman in America. Recently, the Supreme Court justices Sonia Sotomayor and Amy Coney Barrett spoke together publicly about how members of the court speak civilly to one another while disagreeing, sometimes vigorously, about the law. Considerable disagreements on professional matters among the Supreme Court justices, important as they are, remain professional, not personal. They found some, and Justice Ginsburg wore them ever after. At about the same time, Justice O’Connor reminded me that our chief justice, William Rehnquist, had decided that he, too, needed something distinctive on his black robe. For nearly a quarter-century, Sandra Day O’Connor , who died Friday at age 93, was perhaps the most powerful woman in America, often casting the deciding vote when her Supreme Court colleagues divided 4-4 along ideological lines. Her decisions on issues including abortion, affirmative action, voting rights and the line between church and state often reflected a pragmatic middle ground that frequently aligned with mainstream public opinion. O’Connor’s retirement in 2006 sent the court in a new direction. Republican presidents selected justices devoted to formal theories that seek constitutional fealty regardless of contemporary social values. Where O’Connor took each case as it came, today’s majority views the litigation before it as part of a larger struggle over the Constitution’s meaning.

O’Connor, who retired in 2006 after 25 years on the court, died in Phoenix of complications related to advanced dementia and a respiratory illness, the court said in an announcement. Justice O’Connor was an Arizona state judge in 1981 when Republican President Ronald Reagan , fulfilling a campaign pledge to break the male monopoly on the high court, selected her to succeed retired Justice Potter Stewart. She ushered in a wave of women marking “firsts” in the early 1980s, along with America’s first woman astronaut, Sally Ride, and first woman on a major-party presidential ticket, Geraldine Ferraro.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, an unwavering voice of moderate conservatism and the first woman to serve on the nation’s highest court, died Friday. When she retired, Justice Clarence Thomas, a consistent conservative, called her “an outstanding colleague, civil in dissent and gracious when in the majority.”She could, nonetheless, express her views tartly. “I had never expected or aspired to be a Supreme Court justice," she said. The retired justice was relieved that he was comfortable and happy at the center, according to her son, Scott. “It has been a great privilege indeed to have served as a member of the court for 24 terms,” the justice wrote.

What grade would you give America when it comes to making progress on race and racism today? For our latest Times Opinion focus group, held in mid-June, we were curious to get those grades from young Black Americans just before the Supreme Court issued its ruling on affirmative action in college admissions. The court was weighing, on one level, whether affirmative action was no longer necessary to foster diversity on campus, as Justice Sandra Day O’Connor predicted would be the case by 2028. Looking to the future, some hoped that enrollment at H.B.C.U.s would increase with the end of affirmative action. Still, several said they believed the country will have made progress on race 25 years from now compared with today.
